A senior care facility was on the verge of an emergency excavation to relieve a blockage causing backups in the facilities kitchen. The facility was literally within hours of a major excavation ten (10) feet below the floor inside of the facility that would have shut the kitchen down for a couple of weeks. Revive Pipes was called in for a last minute second opinion and with our specialized skillset, we were able to install a Cured in Place Pipe (CIPP) structural liner in the entire main sewer pipe within the wing of the facility serving the kitchen. Revive Pipes completed the entire sewer repair without disruption to the operations of the facility and used only existing cleanouts in the system to access the sewer pipe. The project manager for the facility estimated they saved $700,000 on Revive Pipes alternative to a conventional sewer replacement.

The original contractor on site that advised the facility that the sewer pipe required an emergency excavation was a prominent Cured in Place Pipe (CIPP) inversion lining contractor. Revive Pipes is a specialty Cured in Place Pipe (CIPP) lining contractor with a focus on complex sewer configurations. Revive Pipes is the only Cured in Place Pipe (CIPP) lining contractor in Western Canada that specializes in small diameter sewer pipe lining inside of buildings.

All other Cured in Place Pipe (CIPP) lining contractors in Western Canada focus on straight sewer main pipes than run from a manhole to a manhole or straight sewer laterals that run from a building to a sewer main. Since Revive Pipes focuses on installing Cured in Place Pipe (CIPP) structural liners in complex situations, it makes us the best sewer replacement contractor in Alberta.

To alleviate the immediate emergency situation, the traditional sewer replacement approach that was advised by a mechanical engineering firm and a Cured in Place Pipe (CIPP) inversion lining company would have entailed:

  • Emergency arrangements to provide meals for all of the seniors in the facility, since the kitchen would be shut down during the repairs
  • Negative air pressure hoarding constructed in facility hallway outside of the kitchen
  • Saw cutting of the concrete floor to create an access pit
  • Jackhammering and removal of the concrete from the area where the pit was to be excavated
  • Excavating ten (10) feet down to the sewer pipe in the hallway using a hydro vacuum excavator
  • Shoring of the excavation walls to prevent collapse
  • Replacing the section of sewer pipe with the blockage and hole in it.
  • Backfilling the excavated pit
  • Compacting of the backfill
  • Pouring new concrete slab where the original flooring was cut out
  • Refinishing the flooring

Revive Pipes used six (6) cleanouts and one (1) manhole on the property to access the wastewater system and install over three hundred (300) feet of structural liner in the four (4) and six (6) inch cast iron sanitary sewer pipes.

Although the emergency sewer blockage was only in a short section of pipe, the entire length of the sewer pipe was in a deteriorated condition. The sewer pipes that Revive Pipes installed the structural liners in had several bends and branch connections in them. We used a high tech robotic cutter to cut back open twelve (12) branch connections that were lined over without having to access the branch lines directly.

As the operations of the facility were critical, Revive Pipes performed all the work during the night so that the kitchen could remain open during the day.

Revive Pipes saved the facility $700,000 on the cost of a sewer main replacement that due to the configuration of the sewer system and the nature of the facility would have been tremendously disruptive. Our specialized tools, materials and techniques make us the top sewer repair company in Calgary, Edmonton & Alberta.
